About the Provider

Emily S. Burris, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in evidenced-based assessment and treatment of mood disorders and mental health issues related to trauma, chronic medical conditions, LGBTQ+ status, grief/loss, neurodevelopmental conditions, and psychosocial/phase of life stressors. Dr. Burris is skillfully trained to address specific occupational questions related to fitness for duty and/or flight, provide differential diagnostic assessment for young adults experiencing attention/concentration difficulties, and deliver health-related psychological assessments for transgender health care and surgical patients. She has a diverse clinical and education background that she intends to utilize in private practice in helping others maximize strengths, improve intra- and interpersonal well-being and communication, and identify appropriate treatment and/or occupation-related recommendations.

Her Story

Dr. Burris earned her Master’s of Science in Criminal Justice from Tiffin University in 2010 prior to pursuing her doctoral education. She earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 2017 from the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University, San Diego, CA. Dr. Burris completed her pre-doctoral internship and post-doctoral residency at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, TX, as a United States Army Commissioned Officer where she trained as a generalist across several domains. Following completion of her psychology residency December 2018, Dr. Burris went on to serve with the 10TH Mountain Division at Fort Drum, NY as the Combat Aviation Brigade (10TH CAB) Aeromedical Psychologist, integrated within the aviation medical team. Dr. Burris deployed to Afghanistan 2019-2020, where she provided comprehensive psychological services to her Unit’s Soldiers. Following separation from Active Duty military service, Dr. Burris went on to serve local Veterans through her job within the Battle Creek VA Healthcare system where she was embedded within primary care. As a primary care psychologist, Dr. Burris provided clinical and health psychology related treatment, assessment, and consultation.

 

Dr. Burris completed the U.S. Army Aeromedical Psychology Training Course in 2017 at Fort Rucker, AL, the Traumatic Event Management Course in 2018 at Fort Sam Houston, TX., and  the Critical Incident Stress Management training through the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation in 2023. While working within the VA healthcare system, Dr. Burris was trained as a facilitator of Motivational Interviewing skills for medical providers and completed training in clinician and health coaching. Dr. Burris has significant experience conducting various types of psychological assessment, including diagnostic, fitness for duty, fitness for flight, line of duty/psychological autopsy, security clearance evaluations, sniper evaluations, and assessments to determine someone’s fitness to work in positions of significant trust. 

 

Currently, Dr. Burris works full time as an Operational Psychologist and continues to serve the U.S. Military as an aeromedical psychologist for the Army National Guard. She provides psychological consultative services within the aerospace community.
